What is Japanese sake?

Japanese sake refers to original Japanese wine made mostly from rice, malt, and water.
By definition, sake is made using the above ingredients, and must have 22 percent alcohol content or lower.

Also, if the drink contains ingredients specified by a cabinet order, it is also considered to be sake.

Although people commonly say Japanese sake, there is an incredibly wide variety of sake out there.
There are brewed sake, ginjo sake, and junmai rice sake, just to name a few.
They all have different flavors and charms, and even just a single variety of sake has a wide range of flavors.
Another charm of sake is that there are more flavors and varieties for sake, than there are brands for wine and other types of alcohol.
Sake is also used in flavoring various Japanese dishes, which adds to its charm.

Even though not much is known about the origin of Japanese sake, many speculate that it started around when the people began farming rice.
Sake is known to have gained prominence during the Kamakura period.
In the Meiji Period, sake was officially presented in a world exposition in Austria.

Even after WWII, there have been alternating booms of sweet-tasting and hot-tasting sake that have been continuing until now.
Lately, there has been a boom in Japanese cuisine around the world.
And along with Japanese food, Japanese sake have also started to be seriously evaluated by many.
Drinks such as sake cocktails like “Saketini” have been appearing, too.

The charms of Japanese sake

Then what makes Japanese sake so attractive?
First of all, there are many ways to drink and enjoy sake.
Some sake are served chilled, while some are served warm, or “on the rocks (with ice)”, to offer a few examples.
Some methods involve putting sake in a “Sho (a small rectangular cup), and drinking it while licking the salt or miso put in the corners; some involve drinking sake with lime (called Samurai rock).
There is also a way to drink sake with grated yam (called Tororo-zake), and more unique ways to enjoy the drink.
There are so many ways to enjoy sake; you can drink a single type of sake in hundreds of different ways, which is one of the charms of sake.

Another beauty of sake is that it goes well with a wide range of foods,
from yakiniku (marinated beef), dried fish, to cheese, carpaccio, and stews.
The sheer variety of foods that go well with sake is unmatched by any other type of alcohol.

It’s great that it goes well with all kinds of foods.
You should definitely try and pair Japanese sake with your favorite foods.
Besides other things, I believe the fact that you can have a feel of the local culture by tasting their locally-brewed sake, is one of sake’s best features.

As much as Japan is a vertically long country, its climate ranges from subarctic to subtropical.
As such, Japanese sake vary greatly in flavor. This is a feature that is rare in other types of alcohol.
I’ve mentioned some of sake’s charms, but there are still a lot more things to love about sake.

As for myself, I love cold sake. “Dassai” is my favorite brand.

And although this may sound pretty maniacal, I also like brands called, “Shinigami” and “Ura-Shinigami”.
I wonder if you know about them. (laughs)

Summary

How did you like it? Have you learned quite a few things about Japanese sake?
I hope you can find your own favorite sake in the future, to enjoy it in your very own way.

That’s all for today.

Otsukaresama deshita.
